BRIEF BIO OF SHAIKH SHAFAYAT
Shaikh Shafayat, born in Trinidad, West Indies, has had a remarkable journey as an Islamic scholar, interfaith leader, and community builder. His unique upbringing in a multi-faith and cultural environment earned him a scholarship to train as a Christian Minister. However, in 1975, he chose to pursue Islamic studies and became the first student from the Caribbean and North America to enroll at Darul Uloom Deoband, the largest and oldest Islamic institute in India. There, he graduated as a Qaari and Islamic scholar, further enhancing his expertise with a course in journalism.
During his early career, Shaikh Shafayat established the Al Hikmat Muslim Magazine and produced numerous television and radio programs in Trinidad and Florida. In 1983, he founded the National Muslim Sports League of Trinidad and Tobago, which contributed to the establishment of the Islamic Home for Children.
Shaikh Shafayat is the founder and principal of Darul Uloom Institute in Pembroke Pines, Florida. He made history as the first Muslim to represent Islam at a Florida State Faith Summit in 2000, held at the Capitol Building with Governor Jeb Bush. In 2002, he became the first Muslim President of the Interfaith Council of South Florida. He has organized and conducted numerous interfaith dialogues across the U.S., engaging with Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities in churches, synagogues, and Islamic centers.
He is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Silver Medallion Award from NCCJ, the Peacemaker Award from St. Thomas University, and recognition from the Pembroke Pines Police Department for his lectures on Islam and terrorism. His dedication to interfaith work extends to his role as Co-Chair of the Interfaith Council of Pembroke Pines and as a member of the PBS TV Community Advisory Board. He is also a director of THP – The Humanity Project and the World Aid Council.
Shaikh Shafayat is widely known as a motivational speaker and a beacon of peace and understanding. His lectures on Islam, interfaith issues, and cultural diversity have touched audiences across the U.S. and worldwide.
